Polly is here

By Erik

This is our new pup polly. We think she is the greates. I hope that we are able to train her, or it is going to be a long winter. Posted by Picasa

So, my brother sent me a link to a site that does DNS for free.  I was really quite impressed.  In less than a day the ICANN servers are pointing to my server and my DNS is resolving.  I am quite happy.

Here is a cool little factoid that I learned yesterday.  The somatosensory (body sensory) pathways to the brain have 3 neurons that are involved.  If a lesion were to occur that would block the spinomesencephalic tract, a patient would be unable to show emotion (such as crying) in the event of a painful stimulus.  Suppose, that the spinomesencephalic tract were functional, but the cingulate gyrus in the cerebral cortex had a lesion, then the patient would could feel emotion (such as rage, or crying) in response to a nociceptive (pain) stimulus, but would be unaware of the problem.  This means the patient would cry and wouldn’t know it.  Really interesting stuff!

I was hoping to go back to school to study some pain and hyperalgesia tonight, however, the server that administers our intranet at school went down and I received over 20 phone calls in a matter of 15 minutes.  I am able to type this, because my “the website is down and should be up in 30 minutes” is not too hard to repeat.

I really need to review my pathways.  It gets so terribly confusing knowing which pathway is contralateral and which is ipsilateral.  I need to find some crazy mnemonic to put it all together.

Anesthesia

By Erik

This morning I went to a clinical conference that is held every morning for residents, interns, and 3rd and 4th year rotating students.  The anesthesiologist spoke about pharmacological agents used in the treatment of tracheal trauma.  It was quite interesting.  I never made the connection of an extubation being the removal of the oxygen tube placed in the trachea via intubation.  Another interesting tidbit was that ketamine is a drug that can be used in a wide variety of environments, such as ambulatory medicine for patients that need anesthetics.  I plan to attend more lectures.

Classes start

By Erik

Well, the storm is about to begin.  School starts tomorrow and I am just not ready.  Breaks are always too short and study days are always way too long.  Sometimes I wonder how I have the stamina to put it together.  During finals week I got up every morning by about 3:30 and was hammering it out all day long.  I hope to have some time to do some fun things with my family this quarter.  I think that good planning will allow us to do some activities that we missed last year.

I really enjoy being able to write this in Microsoft Word and then send it to my blog.  Very easy.

Labor Day

By Erik

Well, I am glad to see that this works from Word.  Truly, google makes the computer applications for the “lazy” person.  I couldn’t be happier with what they have done.

Tomorrow is Labor Day, which means I get another day of peace and tranquility before the storm begins.  I am going to really enjoy my Sunday because this quarter is going to be just nasty.  Maybe I will play some halo tomorrow.   Maybe I will just bum around the house and spend some time with the family.

Here is my first post to this blog.  I am writing it from Word, thanks to the blogger plugin for Word.  I am going back to bed.
